Understanding SME classifications is essential for anyone applying for grants or public funding. The definitions below follow the EU headcount and financial thresholds used in Hungary.
What counts as an SME?
An SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) has fewer than 250 employees and annual net turnover of at most the forint equivalent of EUR 50 million, or a balance-sheet total of at most the forint equivalent of EUR 43 million.
Micro, small and medium
- Microenterprise: fewer than 10 employees, and turnover or balance-sheet total of at most the forint equivalent of EUR 2 million.
- Small enterprise: fewer than 50 employees, and turnover or balance-sheet total of at most the forint equivalent of EUR 10 million.
- Medium enterprise: below the SME ceilings above, but above the small-enterprise limits.
Classification is based on the last approved (consolidated) accounts. New businesses use the current business plan.
